Description
At the base of Monte Rosa, at the center of the Lys Valley, are two villages, Grassony St Jean and Gressoney La Trinité. Their reputation is connected both to their unique folklore, due to the ethno-linguistic characteristic traits of the inhabitants, the Walser, of German origin, who immigrated during the Middle Ages, and due to their being well-equipped ski resorts and summer holiday resorts. Rich in hotels, stores, sports facilities,
restaurants, discotheques, and skating rinks, the two towns offer possibilities for relaxation or excursions, above all to the Gnifetti Refuge and to Quintino Sella, points of departure for ascents of Monte Rosa. Together with the nearby valleys of Ayas and Alagna, Gressoney Valley constitutes one of the largest ski centers in the Alps, the “Monterosaki,” which has over 53 lifts and 180 km of slopes. The cross-country skiing offers famous tracks such as “Monterosalauf,” that winds through the plain of Gressony St. Jean.
As for gastronomic specialties, along with typical Valdostano dishes, one can try the boiled spek accompanied by sauerkraut, potatoes and carrots, roast beef with myrtle marmalade, yellow-flour gnocchi called “knolle,” and “canostrelle,” biscuits served with whipped cream.
To visit, the parish church of S. Giovanni Battista, rebuilt in 1725 on the site of an ancient church from the 1500s, with a frescoed doorway from 1625
