Description
Rising at the base of Gran Paradiso, in the heart of the National Park with the same name, this was a large mining center, before it became an important tourist center. Its iron mines produced metals in great quantity, since the time of the Salassi, the population that lived in these mountains before the arrival of the Romans. Today it is a popular destination for lovers of cross-country skiing, who have at their disposition some 80 km of slopes that traverse fairy-tale landscapes. It is also possible to ride over snow-covered trails and observe the life of the village, traveling through it with a horse-drawn sled. From the splendid meadow of S. Orso, in front of the town, there are three valleys of great naturalist and landscape interest: Valnontey, Gauson Valley and Valeille, at whose entrance one finds the famous Lillaz Falls. Alpine skiers have at their disposition 8 km of slopes with a tram and three ski-lifts.
To see, the parish church of S. Orso from 1202, restored in 1642, and the castle, from 1191. |
